Film Studies
Media and Film Studies Curriculum Intent:
The mission of Beacon Film is to engage students with films deemed culturally, historically or aesthetically significant and works of enduring importance to British, European and Global culture. Our aim is to introduce learners to a wide variety of films in a range of forms from different national cinemas. Being one of the major art forms of the last 100 years, films reflect who we are as individuals and communities. A key aim of our curriculum is to ensure a diverse, inclusive and coherent course meeting all learners’ needs and enabling each individual to fully achieve their potential. On this course students will be taught both the theory and practice of filmmaking and will apply the concepts they have learned in analytical and evaluative writing and through production.
Our core goal as a subject is teach our students two skills:
- To know how to shoot, score and edit a film with clear narrative and genre conventions (30% of final GCSE grade, component 3 NEA.)
- To know and be able to implement the key skills and features needed for a high-level analytical essay.
We believe that by teaching these skills highly effectively, that we are not only equipping our students to obtain very good grades in film studies but we also instilling them with both creative and analytical skills which they will carry into their future careers but could also lead them to following a path of studying and creating narratives in the film, television or performance industries.
